About the play

Viola and her twin brother, Sebastian, are separated after being shipwrecked near the coast of Illyria. Viola, disguised as a boy, enters the service of Duke Orsino, who is in love with Olivia, who in the meantime falls in love with Viola, who has fallen in love with the Duke. The comedy turns into a farce with the appearance of Sebastian, who arrives at Illyria having been rescued by Antonio. Using the enchanting kingdom of Illyria as scenery and balancing on a thin, silky tightrope between light and darkness, Shakespeare writes about the madness of love.

Director’s Note

The Twelfth Night, written between 1601 and 1602, is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies. This popularity is not surprising, as the play offers a great number of comical situations, sometimes discreet, sometimes more intense, sometimes inventive and sometimes ridiculous. The play, however, also contains dark and melancholic elements. Perhaps, it is exactly this combination of light and dark, cheerful and melancholic, harmonious and incompatible that has rendered the work so popular. Like Orsino’s mind – as described by Feste – the play resembles the opal: charmingly iridescent and full of changing color shades. This chiaroscuro in combination with the bittersweet atmosphere make the mysterious Illyria familiar to the modern audience while admittedly not always so comfortable.

The play was staged on the occasion of the 400 years anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare (April 23, 1616), while on the 23rd of April 2016, a performance was staged so as to participate in the global celebration.
